These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. Initially, just third-level registrations were permitted, so if you wanted to purchase john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and second-level registrations were also allowed. Already bought third-level domain names remained running.
